About Nok Him Chan

Nok Him Chan is a cellist, composer, conductor, and pianist currently studying at the Royal College of Music, pursuing a Master's in Performance. He graduated from the Royal College of Music with first-class honours with joint principles in cello performance and composition, studying cello with Alastair Blayden, composition with Mark-Anthony Turnage and Deirdre Gribbin, and conducting with Toby Purser.

Chan frequently appears as cello principal of orchestras and was invited to perform at 11 Downing Street in 2024 to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, directors, and heads of faculties at the Royal College of Music. Chan frequently performs recitals in London, and he has toured as a soloist with the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra in the United States, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Chan was awarded an honourable mention in both the Royal College of Music Cello Competition 2024 and the Contemporary Competition 2025. He is a co-founder of the New Light Duo with Malaysian Harpist Ian Lim, which has performed recitals in London and Belgium.

Chan’s compositions had been performed by performers in London and Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, RCM orchestras and ensembles, Fidelio Trio, Cong Quartet, NOVA Ensemble, and more. His Starry Night was selected as a winner for RCM’s Large Ensemble Composition Competition in 2024.

Chan has conducted the Hong Kong Youth Philharmonia and the Apollo Sinfonia, which he was a co-founder and founder, respectively, and worked with pianist Misha Kaploukhii. He also assisted in conducting choirs at the La Salle College and the Fulham/Kensington Chamber Choir.

As a pianist, Chan performed in the RCM Chamber Festival and SonataFest and performed on the Magnetic Resonator Piano as an improviser in the Great Exhibitionist Festival. In 2024, he co-founded the 147 Duo with pianist Nico Varela and regularly performs recitals in London.

Chan is also part of the Maponous Trio and a co-founder of the New Light Collective.

Chan is an RCM scholar and an awardee of the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme.
